Meet Our People
Doug Becker
Hi, I’m Doug, and I am the founder, director, and CEO of The Malaria Project.
How did all of this come about? Ever since I did internships during and shortly after college doing mosquito illness monitoring and control at public health departments, I have had one huge recurring thought stuck in my head: Why can’t we do this everywhere? Malaria, and other diseases transmitted by mosquitos, essentially do not exist in the wealthy, developed parts of the world. So, we know we can do it. Let’s do that everywhere else, I say.
What qualifies me to undertake such an ambitious, well, undertaking? I have a BS, MS, and PhD in the environmental disciplines (health, science, and engineering), and I did two postdoctoral fellowships (one at a university and one at a conservation nonprofit organization). My educational and professional backgrounds have taken me deep into the rabbit holes at the nexus between environment, people, and health, both in scholarly and practical ways. I would like to think that I possess the unique combination of know-how, analytical skills, and passion that have put me in the perfect position to do something like The Malaria Project.
